Our first few lectures allowed us to enter into the vast world of philosophy via its different disciplines (i.e. epistemology, metaphysics, logic, etc). We saw how it addresses a variety of questions, the mystery of the world, and how it even arises out of the depths of our being when we are confronted with death!
This week I would like for you to consider and respond to the following question:
How do you think philosophy is useful/practical in today's world.
This question requires some thought; don't rush through it. Your response should be no less than 3-4 sentences. Remember, you are graded on how well thought out your response is!

ReplyDeleteWell in japan today there was a major earthquake that has not only distroyed a large part of their own country. Its disstruction spread to hawaii and callifornia. This did only impacted a few countries, it effected the minds of people all around the earth. If philosophy is jolted by death, this massive turmoil to a society prepared for this type of dissaster, im sure people all over the world are questioning their own mortality, and if no where is safe then they are probably feeling they're alive only from the power of a higher being. There for trying to figure out ones purpose here on earth only reinsteling the basic questions of our fathers of philosophy. Only proving it plays a very vital part in todays day and age no matter how advance one would think of our society. We're in 2011, it's just another year, and we still go through many different problems as individuals a part of a society that philosophy is always a guiding entity. That will never change.

I'd say philosophy is a very useful tool in society today. People use philosophy everyday, not by pondering life's philosophical meaning, but on a more modern scale. Philosophy is useful as a means to assess and evaluate ones self, or various situations one may find them-self in. By stepping back and evaluating things with an optimistic attitude, you are sure to retain some self affirmation from your actions. In that aspect, I think philosophy is useful in today's world.

Philosophy is useful in today's world becasue we have so many things going on. Philossophy can be used when we speak about global warming or religion. Global warming in the first topic that came to me because it is a big issue in today's society. We can say that global warming isn't even an issue. We can also say that we are causing global warming becasue of pollution and other things we do that may hurt the environment.

ReplyDeletePhilosophy; Better known as, philo-sophia, the ‘love’ of ‘wisdom’ in it’s etymological form. To question the value of philosophy is rhetorical. Without wisdom there would be no societal progress, without which there would be no anthropological evolution, without which today’s world would seize to exist. If people did not have love for wisdom, as h. sapiens, we would have never made it to the post modern era which we have evolved to today. However, as we welcomed modernity with each new generation in the human existence, we made momentary gratification and leisure more accessible for the westernized populace invoking an inevitable paradigm shift. The human ontology in the world we live in now adheres to materialism which possesses philosophy to surely go undermined. Despite the decline of philosophical value among majority of the young demographic today, philosophy will be and always has been an ubiquitous force that will exist in the human mind. In current times I believe that philosophy exists in it’s best form among Buddhists who believe science and their religion are complementary investigative approaches with the same greater goal of seeking the truth. I perceive philosophy as a seed that’s planted in every human mind, it’s just a matter of acquiring photosynthesis.

I think philosophy is useful and practical in today's world because in a sense it helps shape us and also to think beyond the surface, in the sense of instead quickly thinking about something and moving along you take time and analyzing it. ReplyDeleteI think philosophy is useful and pratical in many ways. when it comes to philosophy(existentialism) deals with human modes of existence, thoughts, feelings and experience. I will say we all use Existentialism because in our everyday life we all have feelings and we all have everyday questions of life. I beleive philosophy keeps us on a balnaced scale when we live our lives day by day. When it comes to Ethics, Ethics helps us to know if we should do something that is right or wrong? Ethics helps us to make decisions that we will have to deal with for the rest of our life.We use philosophy everyday and philosophy helps us to live a balanced life.
Philosophy is useful in today's world because it keeps some of us searching for the answer to that question we ask ourselves in the dark. That question that some of us have a different answer to. Philosophy is in the air whether people realize and acknowledge it or now. It was probably a philosopher who thought of making Japan as well prepared of a Nation it is today for earthquakes and things of that nature. Everyday people are dealing with philosophical questions; do I spend my last dollar on this food or pay my phone bill? Philosophy comes in to play in little question like that and also on a wider scale of questioning life itself. It is very useful to become your own philosopher and ponder everyday events and happenings as they happen to better understand the meaning and the message that everything event leaves behind. The ability to see the flaws in ones design is better than seeing all the perfections. Is philosophy practical in this day and age? I believe it is. Budgets are philosophical decisions that weigh the adverse with the positive outcome. I believe that every one can be a philosopher as long as you have the essential tools; language and knowledge.

I think we need philosophy more than ever now than before. To me philosophy is used more and more in people's lives and people use philosophy and they might not even realize that its somewhat related to philosophy. Philosphy can help people make important decisions about the usage of new technology such as cell phones, computers, etc. Some people also turn to religion to seek for guidance. But philosophy shakes the grounds these solutions walk on. Many scientist and people in general have been very stubborn in there ideas and have started to portray them as TRUTHs. When in philosophy we know there is no complete truths. Just theories that have yet to be dis proven. Philosophers keep asking the questions, showing scientist and people that with one discovery the Paradigm of our world could change.
i believe that philosophy is very useful in the modern world because philosophy is focusing on addressing big questions such as soul, mind is there a god theses questions fall into one essential branch of philosophy called ontology. Many of us ask questions about whats right and whats wrong and how should i live my life? should i just live and have fun and go out and make money as many of us do or there is a propose of life? why god create this universe to do what ever we want or to obey him and do everything he command us to do that is if we believe in god in first place.philosophy is allowing us to expand our minds and explore the world and think deeper instead following what people are saying. you can say and argue about anything as long you back it up with evidence and that falls into another branch of philosophy. people used philosophy in the past and there using it in the modern time and they will use it in the future as long people are thinking.

I believe that philosophy is useful today in a very similar way as it was in the Renaissance area. While what we know and our ability to find out the truth is different and more advanced in this day in age, we are still very blinded by the media. Many of us just sit and listen and believe all the information that is thrown at us through various information sources-TV, newspapers, websites. But it is very important to us to question what we are being told and investigate the truth for ourselves, not just trust something we really know nothing about when it comes to behind the scenes. Otherwise we are just like the people in the renaissance age who listened without question to the preachers in their church, telling them lies about the earth and their own human value.

ReplyDeleteThe whole premise behind philosophy is addressing big questions. It’s useful because it paves the way to critical thinking. Which is the only reason modern society exist in the first place. The irony in all this is we still have no definite answers, only justified truths. Philosophy is practical in today’s society because our progression depends on it.
Philosophy is not only useful in today's world, it is and has been a necessity for humankind since the beginning of it's existence. The ability to ask, what is this how does it work, is this real, what happens when I do this? These are all questions philosophy can address. These are all questions that allowed us to come as far as we did. These types of questions are what allow us to achieve fulfillment. These types of questions will continue to help us advance the world around us, and people themselves (If used for the proper reasons). People have to find out who they are, what they stand for, what they want out of life, what's their calling, is it all real? It is coexistant with us, our brains constantly utilizing this process of seeking understanding throughout our entire lifetime, always learning, always adjusting.

Philosophy open our eyes and mind to do things ethically, because we are human we can do evil easy.
